Natural Resources and Fossil Fuels

Renewable - vs - Nonrenewable
Natural resources are natural substances that humans can remove from the earth. Natural resources that can be easily replaced like, , water, , solar energy, oxygen and animals are considered renewable resources.
Natural resources that cannot not be replaced as fast as we use them like , oil, natural gas, (fossil Fuels),and minerals are considered nonrenewable resources.

We use fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas) to run our automobiles, heat our homes and to make electricity. We also use fossil fuels to make many products.

Products made from fossil fuels are called petrochemicals.

You are wearing petrochemicals right now. Nylon, manmade rubber, plastic, and cosmetics, and all made from petroleum.

Look at the picture.

Do you think any of these things were made from fossil fuels?

Believe or not, all these products were made from fossil fuels.

Since fossil fuels were made millions of years ago they cannot be easily replaced. Our dependency on fossil fuels has caused many problems. Not only are we running out of them but also burning them is the leading cause of pollution.

It is important for us to find alternate energy resources such as solar and wind energy.

Watch the powerpoint to learn more about the problems of using fossil fuels and alternate energy resources.
